The Freeloader project (an innovative ringtone project created by Kisky Netmedia and commissioned by FACT) is now closed and archived.
Freeloader had hundreds of original content submissions, the project reached hundreds of pupils in schools and tens of thousands in the wider online community. We had all sorts of audio and delivered content to all sorts of phones worldwide. The project was featured in the WRO Media Art Biennial and was enjoyed by mobile phone owners, participants and artists alike as an original destination for innovative mobile content.
A fixed term project, Freeloader is now archived with a collection of information on the state of user generated ringtones circa 2004! The archive page can be found here. Freeloader was one of our first mobile projects. It is perhaps the first projects I have been involved in that is "no longer around" and as such I really wanted it to be archived in some way.
The 'archive' a simple page just contains basic information so as to keep a record of what it was and when - which is important. Freeloader was the only 'user generated mobile content' project at the time; we began it in 2003 I recall. Looking back over the project documentation it is amazing to read abut the limited tone formats and how we had to make it compatible for people who could only use monophonic tones!
C21tones is a later project with a similar ethos - by late 2004/5 we were on MP3 and MIDI only. I guess now it'd be MP3 'music' rather than just tones!
